My favorite neighborhood restaurant
by Kate202
I'm devastated. Another victim of the economy. Puran's had two locations. One on La Brea and the other on Hillhurst in Los Feliz. The La Brea location is in my neighborhood and one of my favorite restaurants. Unfortunately, it just CLOSED.
I still strongly recommend going to Hillhurst. They have terrific food. I'm particularly partial to the dover sole special, which they will make anytime -- even if it's not listed that day. Oh and for a city where the bread at restaurants is not worth eating 90% of the time -- their bread and dip is fabulous.
- Pros: great organic food
A favorite

Great, fresh food, friendly service. We always bring our own wine for a minimal corkage fee. I've never had a bad dish, but especially like the warm goat cheese salad and the spicy penne.
- Pros: Food, service, ambience
- Cons: Parking
Puran - great atmosphere, great food

Very simple as far as decor goes. Not pretentious. Food is fantastic. Wine is reasonably priced. Not overcrowded or filled with "cool Hollywood Crowds" which is great. Really enjoyed my first time experience here!
Great Meals!

I love this place. My husband and I started eat at this restaurant since our first date, which was 4 years ago and we eat there once a week ever since on our date night. We tried almost all their foods, all of them are unbelievably delicious and fresh. The service is always great and the waiters are knowledgeable and kind. I highly recommend this restaurant. We've had great experience!!
- Pros: foods!!!
- Cons: parking
Our local favorite

My partner and I go to this European style restaurant often, partly because it's close to home, but more because of the friendly staff and consistently great food. It's not a "scene" type of place, but has it's own simple, even romantic charm. Our favorites include chicken stuffed with goat cheese, the warm salad, Gorgonzola mashed potatoes, bouillabaisse, sole with couscous and of course the bread. My favorite dessert is the pear tart, but they've replaced it with a strawberry version, which others seem to like, but I hope the pear tart makes a comeback. Definitely agree with others who suggest the specials should change more often. They're always the same. But luckily there are so many great choices on the regular menu, I always find something new to try. We've tried the Los Feliz location, but like the La Brea one better. It's quieter and seems friendlier.
Amazing!

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I went with a large group, and each and every entree was delicious and unique. Service was warm and friendly, atmosphere is great, prices are so reasonable. Great for a date, friends visiting from out of town, birthdays...just go!!
- Pros: Everything...did I mention the produce is organic?
- Cons: Not really a big con, but you either bring your own wine, or settle for the house red/white
Rude owner, loud, overpriced.

I was the 3rd arrive-ee of a party of 11 for a friend's Saturday Birthday Brunch. We sat outside on the patio awaiting the rest of the guests when the owner/manager rudely ushered us inside "your table is inside! if you sit at this patio table I will loose customers!" - uh.. the place was totally empty. We moved inside and continued the brunch. The place filled and we ate. Food was average all around. It became so noisy inside we were all yelling across the table to talk. II wasn't that hungry so I ordered PLAIN angel hair pasta. They charged me $12.95!!! For plain pasta... Anyway, there are lots more annoyances but the rude owner and the $13 plain pasta tops the list. Avoid!!
- Pros: Bread was good
- Cons: Rude owner, expensive cork fee, average food, noisy, pricey
Wonderful food

Great food, great ambiance, and most importantly wonderful service. The Beet salad is to just wonderful, the salmon is cooked perfectly to the point that it does not taste fishy at all. I have been there a couple of times and have had the best experience, so far
bad service

I took my friend from NY to try out this place. Food was good, we liked it. But from the beginning, server's attitude was so cold....my friends totally thought this was LA attitude.
When we go out to eat in NY, any places we go, at least server are always so nice and down to earth.
This place, server didn't have any personality and just tried to take our food away before we were finishing.
Also the meal left over was pretty good amount to take home, so we wanted to take it to go, but he took all out before asking. I hate to waste. I guess nobody take left over to go at this place? well, it's a shame since we could gone back if service were nice. I can't really recommend it.
- Cons: service
great food and easy atmosphere ALL the time
by demiloca
I have been there probably 30 times. The food is fantastic - anything you get (although I love the seabass and couscous), starting with the table bread and dip which I've tried to replicate. The fact that they don't charge for that bread and dip AND bring me more upon request is soooo generous. I love rustic and simple euro ambiance, seating and french doors that open to the street. If you are looking for a scene, this is NOT it. It is low keyed, easy, great food, great service, no reservation required. I think the person who found it horrible is really looking for a scenester place.
