Inaka has high quality organic macrobiotic panAsian food in a down tempo, fresh, atmosphere. I was delighted with their friendly service. Over all it was a simply restorative and enjoyable experience. I hopw it will be a long time favorite.

Super-Healthy-Restaurant

by Misawa83 at Citysearch

A rare jewel in the rough. My boyfriend is a vegan and I love fish - this is a place that meets both our needs. Healthy yet delicious food for the vegetarian, I recommend this place for those who like organic food and Japanese food. If you eat fish, you'll love the chilean bass with lotus roots, gobo, miso soup, and bean spouts. My boyfriend orders the yakisoba (Japanese noodles) everytime. This place is so exotic and different; it is one of my favorite restaurants. If my boyfriend was not a vegan I would never have found this place. A good source to find more restaurants like this one is at website happycow - a healthy guide to vegetarian and healthy restaurants.

Exquisite macrobiotic food, still wonderful after all these years!

by fnsa at Citysearch

We are SO LUCKY to have Inaka in a trendoid place like LA where few longtimers survive. The atmosphere is calm and serene. It's not a showy place, you can go there hiding from the world. But the food is the true star. I'm amazed why it's not packed every night. Pure flavors, exquisite Japanese combinations brimming with health. Kombu, wakame, hijiki, natto, superb miso...aaah....Plenty of refills of genmai-cha. Tofu chocolate pudding is awesome. There are a few fish dishes but I only get the vegetarian combinations. I hope Inaka lives on and on and on...

  • Pros: Everything, from the food to service to ambiance
  • Cons: None. Absolutely none.

Organic Japanese fare that honors the temple of the healthy body.

by Contributor at Citysearch

In Short
Both loud talkers and pensive readers settle into comfy wood chairs and find common ground in the minimalist, off-white dining room. Inaka's been serving organic Japanese fare--no sugar, eggs or animal fat--for close to three decades. Dishes include soups like Kabocha pumpkin or mixed bean soup. Inaka bowls are a mix of daily beans, kabocha, ohitashi (marinated greens), tofu and sea vegetable over brown rice. Side orders of deep-fried tofu are garnished with ohitashi and radish; drinks include cold-roasted barley tea.

This is the the kind of healthy food that tastes great and makes you feel even better. It's the kind of place I like to go to after a great workout. The clean & minimalist interior, excellent staff, & even better food make Inaka one of my top favorites!

This is your Food Temple!

by khakikey at Citysearch

I was there last week for the first time, ready for possible disappointments after reading the reviews here...But there were none. I found the food to be extremely good and "clean". If you are addicted to screeching tastes this is not your place, but if you have a detoxified palate, this is your temple.

The service was great. 2 waitresses were always vigilant and ready to answer questions with a big smile. The food came promptly and wasn't rushed away when finished.

The Hollywoodian looking crowd was easy prey for gossip, and there was a celebrity dining next to us, but no attitude, just interesting, calm individuals. A nice utopian mix of everything, with soothing energy that made the food even better.

Was it my lucky day? Maybe. Just in case, I'll be checking Inaka frequently. There is NOTHING like it in this town, and there should be! Support it.

  • Pros: Ubber "Clean" Food, Excellent Service, Utopian Ambiance
  • Cons: Just one location

Great Food - Not So Great Ambience or Service

by sweeps at Citysearch

The portions are not big but the food here is fresh, macrobiotic and delicious.

Don't expect great ambience or service though - it's very business-like. Once you receive your food, you don't see a waitress again 'til dessert time. Anything you want in between, you'll have to leave your seat to request.

I used to like the old incarnation of this restaurant. It was kind of hippy-dippy but the waiters were friendly & accommodating, giving the place more warmth & character. The portions were bigger then, and so was the dessert selection.

Still love the food, but don't frequent Inaka as much because of it's cold ambience & service.

A meal with fish and vegetables averages $20. Vegetarian meals; less.

No wine/beer, but you can BYO for a $4.50 corkage.

Highly recommended - when you want a delicious, healthy meal but don't mind a shortage of warm ambience & service.

  • Pros: very good food, healthy
  • Cons: slightly expensive, cold atmosphere, cold service

Fabulous!

by sandberns at Citysearch

Fabulous!

The food is superb! Everything tastes wonderful and is so increadibly healthy. Even with a full meal and a delicious dessert (I highly recomend the chocolate mousse) you feel totally satisfied and good about yourself and your health. Everyone is very friendly and eager to serve. The toughest part is deciding what dish to get, they are all so tempting! The servings are pretty large. Personally, I always take something home with me so I can warm up another serving of great macro food with out so much effort. Each dish has so much variety, I can never make my macro food so varried, colorful and delicious in a single meal - it's too much work. Inaka pulls it off without a hitch. It's just too bad there is not one closer to us in the South Bay. I hope this helps. Happy eating!!!

  • Pros: Great Food, Good Service, Calming Ambience
  • Cons: Street Parking Only, Not inexpensive

you are what you eat

by paulineb at Citysearch

when you first walk in, you know that this restaurant is like no other in LA. there are many other natural food restaurants, but none have been around as long as this one, or as true to the ideal of "you are what you eat" as Augie, one of the departed chefs used to say. It's got it's quirks, but that just makes it more charming and real. My favorite (and always will be) restaurant in LA.
