Arguably the most delightful stop on much-hyped Montana Avenue, this ode to the magic of childhood--with its impressive collection of literature and dizzying selection of artwork--honors the Maurice S

This museum-like testament to the art of illustration quietly posing as a charming Santa Monica storefront is not limited in its appeal to children. With a staggering register of artwork, from original Pinocchio storyboards and authentic works from "Fantasia," Dr. Seuss and "Sleeping Beauty" (hooray for proximity to Hollywood!) to adult sci-fi art and giclee prints from Clive Barker, there's a lithograph or limited edition for everyone. The incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff is happy to educate spellbound patrons on the exhibits--past showcases have included illustrations from Barry Moser's acclaimed "The Blessing of the Beasts"--and give background on the inventory from Eric Carle's famous green caterpillar to Shaun Tan's revolutionary graphic novel "The Arrival." The shop organizes frequent readings from authors like Laura Numeroff and anti-censorship campaigns. Most importantly, it's the perfect spot for parents to read books with their children.
Who would've thought? Three words: FAB.U.LOUS!

I've passed by this store a dozen times and never did I think to walk in, even though I love books. (Honestly, I think the name is why I couldn't bring myself to do it before ... ugh, what is with all the lame names on Montana???!) Anyway, I am soo glad I finally made it in! This shop rocks! Like, beyond measure. I've been back several times now and I think what makes it so special, other than the friendly & very informed folks working there, is the unique stuff they carry surrounding the books ... things like one-of-a-kind art from the authors/illustrators, and really cool lithographs (I just got one from Eric Carle!!) and other special items like original sketches from Disney books and the like. There are cool cards for birthdays, etc.., puzzles, toys (like Wooly Willy) and charms all related to classic and new children's literature. While you won't find any discounts here, you will find special gifts for adults & kids that you can't really find anywhere else.
- Pros: Just about everything
- Cons: No sales!
