Very Nice Owner
by nf711
We arrived close to closing time and they stayed open late for us which was very nice of the owner. The chicken coconut curry was amazing!
- Pros: Great food, good prices, friendly owner
SLOW service, RUDE Waiter

My fiance and I decided to try this place for lunch today. We arrived at 2:30 just in time for the lunch special. We were greeted by a grumpy host who took us to a booth without place settings. He never brought them - we had to walk over and ask when our salads came. There were only 3 diners in the restaurant at the time, so it was not busy. The couple behind us ordered about 5 minutes before we did, and they ordered the exact same thing as us: Chicken Korma and Chicken Tikki Masala. The difference is, they got their entrees in about 15 minutes, and we waited 55 minutes. We were just about to walk out when rude Indian waiter brought our food. The galling thing was, we watched him serve entrees to two different couples who had come in 30 minutes after us. After we had been waiting for 20 minutes, I asked if I could change my order to white meat. Rude Indian Waiter gave me a dirty look and said, "It's too late." Then we waited another 35 minutes. He never came to check on us, to tell us what was taking so long, or anything. When it FINALLY arrived, the food itself was good, except I detest dark meat, so I just ate rice, naan and Korma sauce. My fiance and I both noticed Rude Indian Waiter's demeanor change as it was time to get the check and box the food. He suddenly became kinder and more efficient. Needless to say, I won't be back. There are other places in LA with great Indian food that treat customers better.
- Pros: food is good
- Cons: waiter was rude, inattentive. Food took an hour to come out.
great place

I have been a regular at Gate of India ever since I moved to Hollywood 4 years ago. This is my goto place for heartwarming Indian food. My usual Chicken Sag and Peshwari Naan.
- Pros: all
Great price, amazing food, lots of vegetarian options, HUGE portions.

My friends ordered from this place for take-out one night, and I made the mistake of not ordering anything for myself! The food was so delicious I ended up mooching off of everyone else's plates. I finally had the chance to try it again tonight, and the food is even better than I remember. The menu is huge, including a great selection for vegetarians. There was so much to choose from so I just played it safe and ordered vegetable masala, samosas, and garlic naan. Everything was amazing, down to the sauces and rice served on the side. The owner gave me my order and he was very friendly. The restaurant is deceptively nice inside considering it's location (inside a strip mall). I can't wait to go back to try some of the other menu items. Highly recommended!
- Pros: Food, Service, Prices
- Cons: Parking a bit tight in the strip mall

We loved it
by LAFoodster
We were recommended this place by friends. Being from NY, we love Indian food and we really enjoyed it. Got basic stuff, samosas, Chicken Tikka Masala, Paneer Korma. Nice flavor . Tried other joints in the neighborhood, this was definitely the best. We will recommend it to others.
- Pros: food, service, value priced
- Cons: Parking
what a joke, forget the reviews

Was craving good (at least good) indian food and as "best of 2008", how can we go wrong? Drove one and half hours just to get there, waisted soo much time in traffic. So, we had to take out instead of eating in (long drive back). Got home, opened the boxes and realized that for $53 we got old wormed up left overs from lunch or probably that lunch buffet ($6.99!!). For $53 they did not bother to cook our food fresh! Hard overcooked meats that we could't swallow, dry shriveled up okra, chewy gummy breads, flavorless spinach and so on. We are not hard critics, eat pretty much all kinds of foods and love it, but this time... our worst of 2008. Economy in this bad shape, they are not going to have a customers for long (may be food was bad for take outs only) Who would want to pay full price for leftovers? Shame, shame. Highly UNrecommended.
- Pros: nicely decorated ceilings
- Cons: food was NOT fresh, left overs from lunch (or day before!)
OVER RATED
by jayjroy
So over rated! Who writes these reviews... seriously?
First off I'm Indian, so I know good food. I went there Tuesday night with my family and the food was above average, but definitely not the best. I asked the waiter, "As first time customers what would your recommend". He replied, "Everything is good" and walked away.
The service was terrible! There were three other groups at this restaurant, it was dead! And some how it took 35mins for our apps (tandori hot wings = good) and then another 20 mins for our food. Finally we were done and waited 20 mins for our check. I eventually went up to the front to get him to bring out check.
Final Results: Above average food, poor poor service, stoned waiter (very dumb), small portions, decent price.
Hope this helps!
THEY HAVE A "B" RATING ON THEIR WINDOW. THATS GROSS!
- Pros: Price, Average Food
- Cons: Service, Service, Service and portions
Delicious, fast service, great catering option.

I used to live in Hollywood and would frequent the restaurant on a weekly basis. Once I moved away, I missed them terribly. One day, I decided to order from Gate of India for our company luncheon in Downtown. Robin helped me with my order and it was so much high end food for 12 people at an unbelievable price. My boss was impressed and I scored major brownie points. Thanks Robin! :-) My favorites are the Tikka Masala, Aloo Matar, Vegetable Biryani, and the Peshwari Naan which is bread stuffed with a blend of coconut, raisins, almonds and cashews.
- Pros: Tasty Food. Quality in Quantity.
- Cons: Parking is tricky.
Your average Indian restaurant.

I'm really into Indian food and curries and this place has simply average curries in my taste. The curries were pretty standard, the flavor wasn't spectacular but its not the worst I've had. However, there was one curry that we ordered (Forgot the name) but it tasted like a combination of alfredo sauce and tomatoes.
The decor was also quite standard for an Indian restaurant, they could probably do a little more than what is there. The Christmas lights that were up and turned on looked pretty out of place considering the feel of the restaurant. Our waiter was pretty nice, and answered all our questions about the food. We went on a Thursday night around 7-8ish and it was pretty empty, parking was pretty easy to find.
- Pros: Service and parking was excellent
- Cons: Food is only about average, but I'm pretty picky.
