Mimosa

by tambs

usually i'm not a fan of french food, but this place is pretty good. I had some duck entree and it was amazing! Not too rich, like french food usually is.

Great food!!!

by Costales

If you value ambiance over food, then this isn't the place for you, but if you're all about the FOOD, then you should check this place out. I'm not saying the ambiance was bad by any means, but it's no Melisse. My fiancee and I went on a Thurs night so it wasn't that crowded. The service was fine although I could see how on a very busy night, they could get understaffed.

The clientele is on the older side although, I did see a few "regulars" pick up orders to go.

The food is fantastic. I ordered the sweetbreads and they were probably the best I've had. Le Petit Chateau USE to be my favorite for sweetbreads but I think I found a new spot. My fiancee ordered the pre fixe menu (onion soup, hanger steak and chocolate souffle). The soup was good. Nothing special. They could maybe add some marrow to the broth to thicken it up a bit. The hanger steak was great. Nice char on the outside but nice and medium rare in the middle. Very tender and very tasty. The chocolate souffle was pretty good too. Strong bittersweet burst with a quick drop off of flavor allowing you to enjoy every bite as if it were your first. The thing I love about this place is that they keep the food true to form, meaning, if you order a steak, you taste the meat. Not like other places that will mask the true flavor of the dish with sauces.

A couple of comments to the other users that knock the food. First, don't ever call it expresso. That kills me. Second, lamb is never to be cooked well done. If you believe that lamb is to be served 100% cooked, then your credibility is shot. For the user that commented on the hanger steak, how was it cooked? Hanger steaks are a lot like skirt steak or flatiron steak. Anything above medium and it won't be as tender if served rare/med rare. If you did order it rare or med rare, then either you got a bad one or I got a really good one.

  • Pros: Great food, VERY reasonably priced
  • Cons: None

Way Below Standard of French cooking

by caffecaffe

I have been to some fancy restaurants in Europe and all over the world, and I thought that this restaurant does not met international standard at all. Other reviewer was quite correct that the service people there were quite rude to some customers as I have encountered the same problem. Service should be placed on top priority. If you cannot keep up the standard, then don't open a French restaurant. As I have noticed the previous reviewer who have posted some abusive languages in this messageboard: You only need to post your experiences/details/comments regarding this restaurant in order to have other prespective diner to review BEFORE THEY GO THERE: good or bad, good service bad service, thats is fine. If you are educated person then you don't need to use abusive language such as (A Dolt ?!!) here. Everyone who decides whether go or not to go has the right to look at and be the judge. PERIOD. We are here to review restauarants and be a food critic but not a Punk or Heavy Metal Rock message board here.

Btw the steak and seafood my wife ordered was quite disappointed.

  • Pros: Quite a selection of French cuisine but disappointed
  • Cons: Lousy service, limited seating

Dine, not eat

by txwno

This is a charming neighborhood spot. Service is above LA standards (which is normally poor) and the food is quite good. Wine list is a bit lacking and the corkage is high, but with a group of friends it works out just fine. As to the negative reviews I read before trying it, please learn to spell before slamming a restaurant. It's espresso, not expresso you dolt! Lamb is not served well done unless you are used to tv dinners. If you are used to McD's then stay out of good restaurants!

  • Pros: Nice atmosphere and pleasant food
  • Cons: High corkage

Worst restaurant in Los Angeles!!!! Bad Bad Bad

by lediningcritic

There are many problems in this restaurant, it seems to be that whoever operate this place does not even know they do have problems and how to run that place. The host was really rude to me, his attitute is so bad and kind of telling me if I am not demographically compatible and I shouldn't come to his restuarant for dining and because of that my appetite was gone. The maraconi au gratin was overcooked, the coffee was served cold, and when I complainted it to the waitress, first of all she agreed to give me a hot French coffee but I did not really get the hot coffee at all. And the biggest health of all: The lamb chop I ordered was not served well done. I mentioned to the waitress that my lamb chop needs to be 100% well done, but when it arrives to my table it was apparently less than medium rare. I got sick after I when home, and for sure this health issue will be reported to heealth ddepartment promptly.

  • Pros: None at ALl
  • Cons: Overpriced, Rude service, inappriately cooking method

love the steak frites

by gabheyman

this is one of my husband and my favorite restaurants. We've been going for the past few years. The steak frites are amazing, french onion soup and frisee salad are also favorites. The sole fish is yummy. the crowd is mixed - ranges from older gray haired folks - but we are in our 30's and there are some of us too. sometimes it takes a tad long for them to take our drink order, but other than that, we love it!

  • Pros: nice service and great food
  • Cons: none i can think of

This isn't France-

by CatsbyEatsToo

My friend and I decided to go out to eat on saturday night, last minute. Wanting to try something new, we decided on Mimosa. It looks SO great, great ambiance, the food smelled great- we were so excited. Then we sat down...

Our appetizer took about 25 minutes to come out, we even had to ask someone to check on it. Even the ladies who sat down AFTER us had their appetizer before we did. We had the Mac and cheese, super oily but edible.

We continually had to ask for water and, I guess, they were shorthanded because our waiter and the maitre d were scrambling around all night, it was impossible for us or the table next to us to get their attention. After about 25 more minutes, our food came. We both ordered Sole and it was HORRIBLE. My mashed potatoes arrived with a thin film on the top- the kind that develops when food has been sitting out for a while- The plate was scorching hot but the food wasn't. The fish was rubbery...and really oily- I had to remove it from my mouth immediately. The lady next to us said that usually the food was great and in France, eating is a leisurely activity- I politely explained to her that this wasn't France and this food, was bad, French or not. We tried to send it back but after about 10 minutes of seeing no one, we decided to just leave money for the mac and cheese and leave- finally the maitre d found us, he asked what was wrong, barely stuck around to hear the answer and disappeared with our plates. On the plus side, he comped the entire "meal" and that was that. I'm sure it's not a bad place, but really, if you can't handle a busy restaurant, don't seat so many people.

  • Pros: Great ambiance
  • Cons: Bad sole, slow and unavailable service

Delicious French food

by manuella

This restaurant is great. Everytime i've gone the food has always been wonderful. The ambience is warm and cozy. Its a fun place to go as a couple or with a group of friends. The menu is varied so anyone can find something that they like. I love the Cassoulet! The service is great and the place is always busy. I would recommend making reservations before hand.

My favourite French restaurant in LA

by rockinrosh

I have always had amazing experiences in this restaurant.

The ambience is fantastic. It isn't trying too hard to be anything it isn't. It is a traditional French restaurant with shmoozy, flattering lighting, fabulous photos on the walls and an unpretentiousness that puts you at ease.

The food is sublime! All those yummy French sauces!!! The soft shell crab special was heavenly.

I've often ordered fish specials, which have never disappointed. The heirloom tomato and burrata salad was fresh and delicious. It's always great all the way to the chocolat mousse, tart tartin or floating island....

Kepp doing what you're doing Mimosa!

My husband and I recently celebrated an anniversary there and the Maitre D' could not have been more charming or ensured a better night for us.

The wine list is good.

We will definitely be enjoying more celebrations there!!!!

  • Pros: Great lighting, great food, great wine, great staff, great clientele

An authentic French Bistro feeling !

by buywine

At Mimosa you'll find some of the most common French dishes, yet so hard to find (at least good ones) in LA ! The onion soup is one of the signature dishes and is truly genuine and enjoyable. The mac & cheese (although not typically French, granted) are also a must-try ! And don't forget the chalkboard specials changing regularly, so that they's always something new to try ! The walls are covered with great Paris photographs which definitely add an immersing feeling to the place. They keep it simple, and that's successful !

  • Pros: Food, Ambience, Specials
  • Cons: Noisy on crowded nights
