During a sale, I brought in my receipt and they would not refund the $20 difference on an item I bought just a few weeks before, without my bringing the original item back in with *all* the tags. REI would have given me the price difference in a second. In addition, they were extremely rude in explaining this policy to me. After years of shopping there and thousands of dollars spent, thinking that I was supporting a "local" store (vs. REI), I will not shop there again.

I've been coming here for years for everything from hiking boots to boxes of Gu. Their prices are reasonable and their return policy is pretty good. Their staff is very friendly but work on commission so sometimes you get a bit of a sales pitch. When loading up on gear, it's easy to spend several hundred dollars in an hour or so of shopping, so just be smart about it. They've got three different areas to park which is nice.

If you're looking for camping/backpacking/climbing equipment, this is the place to go. They have top quality merchandise, and a staff that knows how to use it. They seem to go out of their way to hire people who LOVE the outdoors, and appreciate good equipment.Great end-of-season sales too!

This place rocks! A-16 is an awesome place to prepare for anythings outdoors. The backpacking and camping sections are top notch and carry everything you need. This place is very comparable to REI in terms of product and price.

When outfitting for a long trip, make A-16 your first stop. From comfy backpacks and Lonely Planet guidebooks to first aid kits and Goretex rain gear, A-16 has it all. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and if you're getting shoes, they'll measure your feet in over a dozen different ways. You can even stand on an in-house incline to see how the shoe fits.
Pros: knowledgeable staff
Cons: can be pricey
